It’s that time of year again – time for another major transition to happen. If you are a mom with school-aged children, you know the anxiety and worry that can come as a new school year approaches.
Over the past several weeks, I have had many conversations with moms and without fail a hint of worry surfaces.
“What teacher will my child get? Will she be a good fit for my child?”
“I hope my child finds good friends!”
“What are the school expectations? Is my daughter ready?”
“Will the teacher see beyond my son’s behavior for attention and see who he really is?”
I consider myself one of these moms. The unknown’s of what is to come leaves me anxious, worried, and fearful.
On so many levels this anxiety can cripple me. Each day, I exert so much effort into hiding the anxiety that lies within. But, under this facade are thoughts that, at times, spin out of control with “what if’s.”
My heart pounds inside my chest as I allow worst case scenario’s to play out. This then results in me turning inward, quietly processing all that weighs me down.
This is not how I want to spend my last few days of summer with my children. I’m guessing you don’t either.
Friends, worry and anxiety will always be part of our role as mamas, but let’s decide right here and now that we will not allow it to paralyze us.
A Tool to Fight Worry and Anxiety
Deciding to not let worry take a stronghold in your life takes intentionality on your part. It requires you to stand up and fight.
This fight is for your wellbeing, your health, and your sanity. It’s also for your kids, as you role model how to handle the stressors that come with life.
This fight is for God.
When you say no more to the worries, fears, and anxieties that try to embed themselves into your life, you are saying yes to living a life that trusts God, and no to a life that lives in fear.
Sounds great, right? But, how do you move from head knowledge to action?
First, you need to not allow worry to linger. As soon as you recognize your thoughts turning negative, say, out loud, the word S T O P. By doing this simple act, you are redirecting your attention away from that which worries you and onto a neutral word.
Once you have redirected your attention, select a Bible verse to meditate on. Read this verse over and over again until you feel more in control of your thoughts.
Add to this meditation a breathe prayer to calm your body. Anytime you start to worry, the stress hormone, cortisol, is released. This stress hormone is responsible for your increased heart and breathing rate. It is what makes your body prepared to “fight or flight.”
When you incorporate breathe prayers, you are choosing to calm your body, while simultaneously filling your thoughts with biblical truth.
That’s it. Your fight begins and ends with intentionality.
1. Say the word S T O P – out loud.
2. Meditate on a bible verse.
3. Use breathe prayers to calm your anxious body.
Bible Verses and Breathe Prayers To Calm Your Anxious Heart
Below are four verses and prayers that are speaking to my anxious heart. I pray these verses will help you.
“When you’ve done everything you can do, that’s when God will step in and do what you can’t do.” (2 Corinthians 12:10)
Inhale: Take over,
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
Inhale: I trust,
Exhale: Your plans, God.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)
Inhale: I’m living,
Exhale: With you, today.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
Inhale: Thank you, God
Exhale: For walking with me.
In order for these bible verses and breath prayers to be most effective, have them with you at all times. After all, you just never know when anxiety and worry will strike.
Because I need these verses and prayers as much as you, I decided to create a printable. I encourage you to print it off, cut them up, and strategically place them where you might need them most – your purse, car, laundry room, or by the kitchen sink.
That way when anxiety strikes, there is no need to think. Simply look at your card, read through the Bible verse, and spend a few minutes doing the breathe prayers.
These two minutes might arguably be the best two minutes you spend on yourself.
