It’s 5:00 am in the morning.
It’s dang early, but my natural circadian rhythm tells me its time to get up. Despite my instinct to roll over and go back to sleep, I reset the temptation and quietly tip-toe down the stairs, careful not to stir a soul.
As I wait for the coffee to brew, I pause for 5 minutes and watch the sunrise come over the horizon, greeting me with beautiful hues of orange, pink, blue, and purple, God’s perfect masterpiece.
I’m not sure if there is anything as special as waking up with God!
As soon as the coffee is brewed, I grab a cup and sit down with my bible and pen in hand.
I find the spot where I left off in my devotions. It is there that I begin pouring out my heart to God.
Journaling is my time to hear from God. I’m always in awe at how my devotional for that day mirrors my feelings, my worries, my fears, and my doubts.
Many times the prayers I asked for the night before are answered in my devotional the very next morning! Talk about prompt!!
These answers to my prayers, however, rarely solve my problem. Rather they serve to give me confidence, peace, and an assurance that I’m on God’s path, and He is walking right beside be on this journey in life.
When I hear God talk to me this way, my empty, depleted, and worrisome soul moves to a place of contentment, peace, and fulfillment.
It is there that I find myself breathing in His truth, and exhaling out the lies the devil wants me to believe.
I need this time to breathe and hear from God.
Friend, if I had to guess, so do you.
Starting Your Day With God
If you’ve never woken up early enough to see God wake up the earth, I encourage you to try it.
Of course, it is going to be tough, especially if you are not use to waking with the sun. But, try it anyway. Doesn’t the old saying go, “You can do anything for one week?”
When you wake, grab yourself a cup of coffee or some tea. Find your most comfortable chair and sit in complete silence, taking several deep breaths.
As you begin to settle in, turn your attention to the birds chirping away, the sun streaming through your windows, the trees swaying gently in the breeze, and the skies brilliant radiance.
Next, grab a pen and paper or this journaling page and begin writing a letter to God. My favorite way to start my letters is, Dear Heavenly Father….
What comes next is up to you.
Pour out your fears, worries, anxieties out to him.
Tell Him what you are thankful for.
Ask Him for grace, strength, and help to get through the day.
Pray on behalf of those who are hurting and in need of God’s healing miracles.
What you say and how you say it in your letter to God doesn’t matter. He doesn’t care about misspelled words or incorrect grammar.
He only cares about your heart – and your devotion to spending time with Him.
It is in these quiet moments that you too will begin to hear from God.
“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12, NIV).
God speaks in whispers. He will fill your parched soul when you quiet your mind and body and spend quality time with just Him.
If you are ready to try journaling but still are reluctant, try using this journaling page. It has all the prompts you need to begin talking with God.
Friend, God wants your heart, mind, and soul above everything else in this world. Use the quiet of the morning to say good morning and to let Him fill you for the day.
Praying you through,
