10 Ways to Slow Down Life

May 10, 2019

Life goes by fast, doesn't it? If you are not intentional about slowing down the pace of life, you will not only find yourselves blinking and wondering what in the world happened to the last few years, but doing so exhausted, as you run the hamster wheel of life. If there is one thing that I’m slowly learning, it is that LIFE IS NOT A RACE. Let that sink in a minute because you ... VIEW POST

Well, hey there! I'm Angie, a simple girl who is learning to slow down, embrace rest and self-care, and to prioritize what's most important in life. I love to write about how God is showing up in my life in the areas of family, motherhood, and career.

Instagram post 2174990247355896421_3245450007 Today, on this Veterans Day I honor all veterans, but especially my favorite veteran - my dad!
I have a lot of memories of my dad being in the military. Some very happy times like when he was put on active duty after 9/11 and spent 2 years in the same city as Andrew and I! We not only got to know my dads military buddies (his best friends), but we got a ton of free labor as they helped us renovated our turn of the century, fixer-upper house!
I also hold many fearful memories. I will never forget the 7am phone call from ”The United States Air Force” telling my dad to leave - now - for a special mission not to be disclosed to anyone, not even his family. Or the time when war began and I watched on TV the green missiles flying through the air wondering if my dad was in the line of fire.
And then there are the sad memories where instead of walking me down the isle for the biggest day of my life, he watched and listened (with one of his best friends) the wedding ceremony thousands of miles away, from a military tent where he was once again fighting a war.
While I could hold on to those sad and fearful memories I choose to remember my dad for the hero he is; one who chose his country first in order for me (and you) to be free.
My dad, however, is no different from any other veteran who made the hard sacrifice. They fought (and still fight!) for OUR freedom! So today let's make sure we thank them!

Instagram post 2171326698158905760_3245450007 I woke up this morning to the most beautiful snow fall. As the snow fell I couldn't help but be mesmerized. It was so calming, peaceful; almost as if someone turned over a globe. God showed up in the beautiful way this morning. 🙌

Instagram post 2161134137909929160_3245450007 I feel like the luckiest lady on this earth! I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Dedo @emily_dedo about finding a new calling in life. She candidly shared her struggle with releasing Gods request to move on from her accounting job and waiting many months to find a job that better fits her spiritual gifts and personality traits. Emily’s story is SO inspirational, especially for anyone thinking about changing their job or career!

Instagram post 2156018837596798218_3245450007 The statistics do not lie.

Half a million teachers leave the teaching profession every year, while another 41% leave within 5 years of starting their career.
Reasons for this high drop out rate likely relate to teachers’ quality of life. A recent survey found 61% of teachers found their jobs to be often or always stressful, with another 58% reporting poor mental health as a result of this stress. And while summer break provides a break from the stress, within 2-3 weeks of returning back to school, those same feelings return.
These statistics break my heart and cause me great concern.

The profession that is largely responsible for raising up our next generation of professionals is doing so stressed and burnt out. You and I both know that when we are not at our best, we most certainly cannot give others our best.

And yet that is what is expected of teachers.

The question begs, then, what can be done? How can we help our teachers find renewed energy, passion, and dedication to educate and love on our children?

This one question is being explored in record numbers as researchers desperately look to find solutions.

Recently, I sat down with Lindsay Cook, a 5th-grade school teacher. In our time together, she talked about the stress and anxiety she had experienced and how this stress affected her not only in the classroom but at home as well.
The link to read the rest of blog post and to listen to the interview can be found in my profile. It is my prayer that Lindsay’s story helps teachers or anyone feeling burnt out from their job to think outside of the box, to find a different, better, and, yes, even a healthier way to live.
